About AFC

Over 35 years of engineering excellence in dielectric radome design and manufacturing

Our Story

Pioneering Radome Technology

In 1991, Dr. Ron Posner purchased Antennas for Communications assets from Microdyne Corporation. For over three decades, AFC has been at the forefront of applying composite fiberglass, sandwich composite, and other advanced materials to solve complex electromagnetic structural challenges.

In July 2011, AFC moved into a new 40,000 square-foot facility in Ocala, Florida, where AFC has been headquartered for the last fifteen years.

Today, AFC's product line focuses on high performance dielectric radomes, serving the satellite, military, broadcast, communications, radar, weather, and cable industries, as well as defense, government, and government agencies worldwide. AFC has designed, manufactured, and installed more than 1200 ground-based radomes globally of 3 ft to 110 ft in diameter for VHF to W-band applications. Our quality control manufacturing standards are certified under ISO 9001:2015.

Dielectric Space Frame Technology

As part of the radome panel molding fabrication process, the dielectric panel edges are reinforced into flanges for adjacent panel assembly. When assembled, the panel array forms a truncated spherical radome surface. The dielectric panel flanges form a framework establishing the general terminology Dielectric Space Frame (DSF) for AFC's radome products.

Invisibility of Radome Framework

Not commonly known to most engineers, radome transmission loss is composed of the insertion loss from the RF signal passing through the radome wall and from the scattering loss off the panel flange framework. In most cases, the scattering loss from the framework is several times greater than the wall insertion loss.

To reduce scattering loss, AFC engineers pioneered a technique known as impedance matching to "tune out" framework scattering loss. RF circuit elements are laminated into the dielectric flanges to impedance match scattering loss.

Superior Structural Integrity

AFC defines radome structural safety by a General Buckling criterion based on the geometric deformation of the radome shell, which defines a catastrophic failure wind speed. This ensures our radomes have appropriate structural safety factors for the lifetime of the radome.

Super-Hydrophobic Coating

AFC's proprietary radome super-hydrophobic coating provides an additional layer of environmental protection, repelling water and reducing the accumulation of ice, snow, and debris on the radome surface. This coating helps maintain optimal RF performance in all weather conditions.

Manufacturing

Large-Scale Radome Production Expertise

AFC's 40,000 square-foot manufacturing facility in Ocala, Florida is specifically designed for the production of large-scale dielectric radomes. Our advanced composite fabrication capabilities enable us to manufacture radomes ranging from 3 feet to an impressive 110 feet in diameter.

Our production process combines precision engineering with proven manufacturing techniques. Each radome panel is meticulously molded using advanced composite materials, with dielectric properties carefully controlled to ensure optimal RF transparency. Each radome panel is a one-piece monolithic panel without bond or seamlines. Panel edges are reinforced into flanges for adjacent panel assembly.

For large-scale installations, AFC manages the complete project lifecycle—from initial design and engineering through fabrication, quality assurance, shipping logistics, and on-site installation support. Our ISO 9001:2015 certification ensures consistent quality standards across every phase of production.

When evaluating large-scale dielectric space frame radomes, experience at scale is not a marketing claim — it is a measurable difference maker. AFC has designed, engineered, and delivered more large-scale dielectric space frame radomes than any other manufacturer in the industry.

That depth of portfolio translates directly into reduced risk, refined engineering processes, proven structural performance in extreme environments, and predictable long-term durability. Choosing AFC means partnering with a company whose expertise is not theoretical — it is built on a track record of successful large-scale deployments where precision, structural integrity, and RF transparency are mission-critical.
